Elite Squad led by Otis Lawson, was born from a deeply personal motivation and a desire to address the barriers young people, particularly those from ethnic minorities and low-income households, face in engaging with sports and extracurricular activities. 

Otis’ own experience growing up in Enfield, coupled with the tragic loss of his older brother to knife crime, highlighted the urgent need to provide positive opportunities for young people in our community. Through extensive consultation with over 100 young people via digital surveys and engagement with a core group of 10 individuals, we gained invaluable insights into their barriers, aspirations, and concerns regarding physical activity.

Our programme’s development was meticulously informed by this feedback, ensuring it aligns closely with the needs and preferences of the community. Furthermore, our team comprises local residents who intimately understand the challenges faced by young people in our area, adding authenticity and relevance to our approach. We maintain open communication channels through social media, open days, and community events, fostering a sense of ownership and collective responsibility among community members.

This initiative is not just about physical activity; it’s about fostering holistic development, improving mental health and well-being, and nurturing talents that may otherwise go untapped. By engaging young people in all stages of our programme, from design to implementation, we ensure its relevance, effectiveness, and sustainability. Our ultimate goal is to empower the next generation, providing them with the tools and opportunities they need to thrive and succeed, both on and off the field.
